Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV Delayed to December 3
The Emperor will have to wait a little longer. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV will no longer launch in September, with developer KING Art Games confirming that the highly anticipated real-time strategy game has been pushed back to December 3, 2026.
Originally scheduled to arrive on September 17, Dawn of War IV will now launch for PC via Steam on December 3, 2026, giving the development team roughly two and a half additional months to polish the next chapter of the legendary RTS franchise.
Players purchasing the Commander Edition will retain three days of early access under the revised schedule, allowing them to begin playing on November 30.
Why Dawn of War IV Has Been Delayed
In announcing the new release date, KING Art Games pointed to feedback gathered throughout the game’s development and community testing.
Thousands of players have participated in community playtests, while fans have also responded to faction trailers, Battlefield Reports and other previews released ahead of launch. According to the developer, that feedback has helped shape the experience the studio is building.
The additional development time will now be used to further polish the game before it reaches players.
For an RTS carrying the Dawn of War name, taking additional time may ultimately prove to be the right decision. The series has been absent for nearly a decade following the release of Dawn of War III in 2017, and expectations surrounding its return are understandably high.
KING Art Games isn’t simply releasing another Warhammer strategy title — it’s reviving one of the most recognizable RTS franchises associated with the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Dawn of War Returns to Its RTS Roots
Dawn of War IV is being developed by KING Art Games, the studio behind Iron Harvest, and published by Deep Silver.
The fourth mainline entry is aiming to recapture many of the elements that helped make the original Dawn of War a genre favorite, with large-scale battles, base building, resource management and brutal clashes between Warhammer 40,000’s armies.
The game will feature four playable factions at launch:
- Space Marines
- Orks
- Necrons
- Adeptus Mechanicus
The Adeptus Mechanicus are particularly notable, as Dawn of War IV marks their debut as a fully playable faction in the main series.
Each army brings its own units, commanders, abilities and tactical identity to the battlefield, giving players substantially different approaches to combat depending on which faction they choose.
The Battle Returns to Kronus
Longtime Dawn of War fans may also recognize the game’s setting.
Dawn of War IV returns players to Kronus, the planet that served as the battleground for the fan-favorite Dawn of War: Dark Crusade expansion.
The story takes place roughly 200 years after the events of the original Dawn of War and Dark Crusade, bringing players back to a familiar location while moving the timeline forward into the modern Warhammer 40,000 setting.
The campaign will include the Blood Ravens alongside the Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus, with each faction receiving its own perspective on the conflict.
KING Art has previously outlined a substantial campaign offering with more than 70 missions spread across the game’s factions, alongside decisions capable of changing which missions players encounter during subsequent playthroughs.
More Than Just a Campaign
While the campaign is a major part of Dawn of War IV, the game is also being built as a broader RTS package.
Traditional Skirmish and multiplayer battles will return, allowing players to build armies and compete across large battlefields.
The fan-favorite Last Stand mode is also making a comeback.
Originally introduced with Dawn of War II, Last Stand shifts the focus toward cooperative survival as players fight increasingly dangerous waves of enemies. Its return gives Dawn of War IV another option beyond traditional RTS matches and campaign missions.
KING Art and Deep Silver have also outlined significant post-launch plans.
Free content planned between late 2026 and spring 2027 includes Crusade mode, additional maps, a mission editor and new Commander scenarios for Last Stand and Crusade. Premium DLC is also planned, including additional story and faction content.
Commander Edition Still Includes Early Access
The release-date change also shifts the Commander Edition’s early-access period.
Instead of beginning on September 14 as originally planned, Commander Edition owners will now be able to enter the battlefield on November 30, three days before the standard December 3 launch.
The Commander Edition also includes access to planned post-launch premium content, including the Blood Ravens Story Prologue and additional expansion content.
For players primarily interested in jumping into the game as soon as possible, however, the important change is straightforward: November 30 is now the earliest official opportunity to play the full release.
A Longer Wait for One of PC’s Most Anticipated RTS Returns
Delays are always disappointing for players looking forward to a game, particularly when they arrive relatively close to a previously announced launch date.
But Dawn of War IV carries more pressure than the average strategy release.
The original Dawn of War remains one of the most beloved adaptations of Warhammer 40,000, while Dawn of War II took the franchise in a dramatically different but successful direction. Dawn of War III, however, received a more divided response when it arrived in 2017.
That leaves Dawn of War IV with the difficult task of bringing longtime players back while establishing a new future for the series.
KING Art’s approach appears heavily influenced by what worked in the franchise’s earlier years: large armies, base construction, faction identity and spectacular battles filled with the excessive violence you’d expect from Warhammer 40,000.
An additional few months of development won’t guarantee that the final product lives up to those expectations, but giving the studio more time to respond to testing feedback and polish the experience is preferable to rushing one of PC gaming’s most anticipated RTS revivals out the door.
Dawn of War IV Now Arrives December 3
The wait for the grim darkness of the far future just became a little longer.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV will launch for PC via Steam on December 3, 2026, with Commander Edition owners receiving early access beginning November 30. The game had previously been scheduled for September 17.
After nearly a decade without a new mainline Dawn of War, another couple of months may feel painful for longtime fans.
If that extra time helps KING Art Games deliver the return the series deserves, however, December could be worth the wait.
