Pokémon Pokopia Sales Surpass 5 Million Worldwide

Pokémon Pokopia Sales Surpass 5 Million Worldwide

Aug 15, 2026

Pokémon Pokopia has officially crossed another major sales milestone, with Nintendo announcing that the cozy Pokémon life simulation has now sold more than 5 million units worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2.

The achievement comes just over five months after Pokémon Pokopia launched exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026, further establishing the game as one of the early breakout hits for Nintendo’s latest console. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company previously announced that the title sold more than 2.2 million copies during its first four days on the market, including 1 million units in Japan.

Now, worldwide sales have more than doubled as Pokopia continues to find an audience among both longtime Pokémon fans and players looking for something different from the franchise’s traditional RPG formula.

A Different Kind of Pokémon Adventure

Rather than focusing on catching Pokémon, battling Gym Leaders, and becoming a Pokémon Champion, Pokémon Pokopia takes the franchise in a considerably more relaxed direction.

Players take control of a Ditto that has transformed into a human-like form and awakens in a world where humans have disappeared and much of the environment has withered away. Working alongside Professor Tangrowth and other Pokémon, players gradually restore the landscape and create a new home where Pokémon can thrive.

Gameplay centers around exploration, crafting, building, farming, and developing habitats for Pokémon. Ditto can even learn moves from other Pokémon and put them to practical use. Bulbasaur’s Leafage can restore greenery, for example, while Squirtle’s Water Gun can help provide water for plants.

Players can gather materials, craft furniture, grow crops, cook meals, customize their character, take photographs, and build homes for the Pokémon they encounter. Multiplayer also allows up to three additional players to visit, giving Pokopia a social element alongside its sandbox-style gameplay.

It is a formula that places Pokopia closer to cozy life-simulation and sandbox games than a conventional Pokémon RPG, and the sales numbers suggest the experiment has paid off.

From 2.2 Million to More Than 5 Million

Pokémon Pokopia was already showing signs of becoming a major success almost immediately after release.

Nintendo announced in March that worldwide sales surpassed 2.2 million copies during the game’s first four days, with approximately 1 million of those sales coming from Japan.

Five months later, that figure has climbed beyond 5 million units worldwide.

The milestone also makes Pokopia one of Nintendo Switch 2’s biggest software successes to date. Its performance is particularly notable considering it is a Pokémon spin-off rather than a new mainline entry in the franchise.

Nintendo Switch 2 itself has enjoyed a strong start since launching in June 2025. Nintendo reported that the system sold more than 3.5 million units globally during its first four days, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware launch in company history at the time.

Having another multimillion-selling exclusive gives Nintendo an increasingly diverse software lineup capable of attracting players beyond its traditional flagship releases.

Bubbly Basin Gives Players More to Explore

The 5 million sales announcement also arrives shortly after the release of new Pokémon Pokopia content.

Part 1 of the game’s Expansion Pass, Bubbly Basin, launched in August and expands the experience with a new underwater area. The paid expansion introduces additional environments and content for players who have already spent months developing their Pokémon paradise.

Additional Expansion Pass content is planned, potentially giving Pokopia more opportunities to maintain its momentum throughout the remainder of 2026 and beyond.

That ongoing support could prove especially important for a game built around long-term creation and customization. Unlike a traditional Pokémon campaign that players may complete and move on from, Pokopia’s sandbox structure lends itself naturally to new areas, Pokémon, furniture, building options, and activities.

Pokémon Pokopia Could Have Plenty of Life Left

Passing 5 million copies in roughly five months is already impressive, but Pokémon Pokopia may be far from finished.

The Nintendo Switch 2 audience is continuing to expand, giving Nintendo and The Pokémon Company an increasingly large pool of potential customers. Continued updates and Expansion Pass content could also encourage existing players to return while keeping the game visible to newcomers.

More importantly, Pokopia’s success demonstrates that Pokémon doesn’t necessarily have to follow its familiar RPG structure to attract a massive audience.

Pokémon has experimented with numerous genres throughout its history, but Pokopia combines one of gaming’s most recognizable franchises with the increasingly popular cozy life-simulation and sandbox genres. More than 5 million players have now bought into that idea.

For a Pokémon spin-off that asks players to put down the Poké Balls and pick up the crafting tools, that’s an impressive start.

Pokémon Pokopia is available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
