Splatoon Raiders Tops Japan Sales as Switch 2 Leads
Nintendo continues to enjoy a strong summer in Japan, with Splatoon Raiders holding onto the top spot in the latest Famitsu physical sales charts while Nintendo Switch 2 comfortably leads hardware sales.
Famitsu’s latest estimates cover physical software and hardware sales in Japan from July 27 through August 2, 2026. Splatoon Raiders remained the country’s best-selling physical game for the week, moving another 73,542 copies on Nintendo Switch 2. That brings its Japanese retail total to 548,226 copies following its impressive debut the previous week.
Splatoon Raiders Continues Its Strong Start
The performance of Splatoon Raiders is particularly notable considering the game had already sold 474,684 physical copies during its opening week. Its second-week performance pushes the game comfortably beyond the half-million mark at retail in Japan alone.
Sitting in second place was Rhythm Heaven Groove for the original Nintendo Switch. The rhythm game added another 59,884 copies, bringing its Japanese physical total to 734,476 units.
Nintendo’s older hardware isn’t disappearing from the charts just because Switch 2 has arrived. Several original Switch releases continue to post significant sales alongside Nintendo’s newer console.
Village in the Shade Has a Solid Debut
The week’s biggest new release was Nippon Ichi Software’s Village in the Shade.
The Switch 2 edition debuted with 21,965 physical copies sold, enough to claim third place on the overall software chart. The original Switch version added another 12,458 copies, while the PlayStation 5 version sold 5,880 copies and landed outside the top 10.
Across all three versions, Village in the Shade therefore opened with more than 40,000 physical copies sold in Japan.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream continued its impressive run as well, taking fourth place with another 18,306 copies. Its Japanese physical sales have now surpassed 1.5 million units.
Konami also secured two spots in the top six with its new Prince of Tennis releases, which sold 16,996 and 16,987 copies respectively.
Japan’s Top 10 Physical Games
According to Famitsu’s estimates, the top 10 physical games for the week were:
- Splatoon Raiders — Switch 2 — 73,542
- Rhythm Heaven Groove — Switch — 59,884
- Village in the Shade — Switch 2 — 21,965
- Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Switch — 18,306
- The Prince of Tennis: Sweet School Festival 0-40 and more… — Switch — 16,996
- The Prince of Tennis: Doki Doki Survival eternal passion! Tie break game — Switch — 16,987

- Blue Reflection Quartet — Switch — 7,880
- Blue Reflection Quartet — PlayStation 5 — 7,019
- Powerful Pro Baseball 2026-2027 — Switch — 5,928
The chart demonstrates just how dominant Nintendo platforms remain within Japan’s physical software market. Nine of the top 10 positions belonged to either Switch or Switch 2, with Blue Reflection Quartet on PS5 being the lone exception.
Switch 2 Remains Japan’s Best-Selling Console
Nintendo Switch 2 also comfortably led the hardware rankings.
The console sold an estimated 30,606 units during the week, pushing its Japanese lifetime sales to more than 6.13 million units.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 family collectively sold 10,107 units, with the PS5 Digital Edition accounting for the overwhelming majority at 9,412 units. The original Nintendo Switch family combined for another 8,233 systems.
Hardware sales for the week were:
- Nintendo Switch 2: 30,606
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: 9,412
- Nintendo Switch Lite: 4,325
- Nintendo Switch OLED: 3,384
- Nintendo Switch: 524
- PlayStation 5 Pro: 465
- PlayStation 5: 230
- Xbox Series S: 56
- Xbox Series X Digital Edition: 19
- Xbox Series X: 17
Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles combined for just 92 units during the period, illustrating the enormous difference between Xbox’s position in Japan and its presence in Western markets.
Nintendo’s Japanese Momentum Isn’t Slowing Down
The biggest takeaway from this week’s charts isn’t simply that Switch 2 finished first. It’s the strength of Nintendo’s ecosystem as a whole.
Switch 2 is already well beyond six million units sold in Japan according to Famitsu’s estimates, while the original Switch continues to generate meaningful hardware and software sales years after its launch.
The software charts tell a similar story. New Switch 2 releases such as Splatoon Raiders are performing strongly, while original Switch games including Rhythm Heaven Groove, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Minecraft, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate remain active sellers.
Even Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, originally released for Switch in 2017, sold another 1,766 physical copies during the week and has now reached nearly 6.6 million physical sales in Japan according to Famitsu’s tracking.
With Switch 2 building its installed base while the original Switch remains commercially relevant, Nintendo currently has the unusual advantage of having two generations of hardware contributing heavily to Japan’s gaming market at the same time.
For now, though, Splatoon Raiders remains the game to beat.
