Voice Actor Michael Donovan Dies at 72
Canadian voice actor and director Michael Donovan, whose extensive career included memorable roles in ReBoot, Ranma ½, Dragon Ball, X-Men: Evolution and numerous other animated productions, has died at the age of 72.
The voice-acting world has lost one of its most prolific performers.
Michael Donovan died on March 4, 2026, at the age of 72, according to information that recently surfaced through SAG-AFTRA’s Summer 2026 In Memoriam listing. News of Donovan’s death only began circulating widely this week, roughly five months after his passing.
A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
A Voice Familiar to a Generation
Even viewers who didn’t recognize Donovan’s name likely heard his voice.
His career stretched across anime, Western animation, video games and voice direction, building a remarkably diverse collection of credits.
Anime fans may remember Donovan as Ryoga Hibiki in the English dub of the original Ranma ½. His anime work also included Master Roshi in an early English dub of Dragon Ball, characters in Ronin Warriors, and roles connected to the Fate franchise.
But his work extended far beyond anime.
From ReBoot to X-Men
Donovan was part of several animated productions that became staples for viewers during the 1990s and 2000s.
Among his most recognizable credits was Phong in ReBoot, the groundbreaking computer-animated series produced by Mainframe Entertainment.
He also voiced Guile in the animated Street Fighter series, Wes Weasley in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sabretooth in X-Men: Evolution.
Other credits included The Incredible Hulk, Tom and Jerry Tales, Transformers: Cybertron and numerous additional animated productions.
It was the kind of career where discovering Donovan’s filmography can quickly turn into repeatedly saying, “He voiced him too?”
More Than a Voice Actor
Donovan’s contribution to animation wasn’t limited to standing behind a microphone.
He also worked extensively as a voice director and casting director, putting him behind the performances audiences heard as well as in front of the microphone himself.
That combination gave Donovan an unusually broad footprint within the North American animation and dubbing industries.
His work spanned decades and crossed franchises, genres and generations of viewers.
Fans Are Only Now Learning of His Death
The unusual timing of the announcement has made the news particularly surprising.
Donovan died on March 4, but his passing apparently remained largely outside public attention until his name appeared in SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 memorial listings.
As word spread on August 7 and 8, communities dedicated to Ranma ½, Ronin Warriors, Hot Wheels: AcceleRacers and other productions began sharing memories of his performances.
Fans of AcceleRacers, where Donovan voiced Dr. Peter Tezla and worked as a voice director, were among those paying tribute to his work after learning the news.
Similar tributes appeared among Ronin Warriors fans, where viewers remembered his performances from the show’s English dub.
A Remarkable Voice-Acting Legacy
Voice actors occupy a unique place in entertainment.
Their performances can become inseparable from characters without audiences necessarily knowing the person behind them. Donovan was a particularly strong example—a performer whose voice quietly traveled through countless childhoods, Saturday mornings, anime collections and gaming sessions.
For decades, he helped give those characters their personalities.
And while Michael Donovan may be gone, generations of animation fans will continue hearing his work for years to come.
