The Fertile Crescent 2 Launches in Early Access
The Bronze Age is collapsing, civilizations are crumbling, and survival may prove far more important than conquest.
Developer Wield Interactive and publisher MicroProse have officially launched TFC2: The Fertile Crescent 2 – Collapse of the Bronze Age into Steam Early Access today, August 18, 2026. The story-driven real-time strategy game puts players in charge of a small group struggling to survive one of the ancient world’s most turbulent periods.
Rather than simply asking players to build the biggest army and wipe their opponents off the map, The Fertile Crescent 2 puts survival, food production, resource management, and the lives of your people at the heart of its RTS formula.
Surviving the End of an Age
Set during the Late Bronze Age Collapse, The Fertile Crescent 2 depicts a world being torn apart by drought, famine, political instability, collapsing trade networks, and the arrival of the mysterious Sea Peoples.
Players lead a caravan across this increasingly dangerous ancient world, gathering resources, establishing settlements, producing food, building armies, and trying to keep their people alive as civilizations fall around them.
The result is a somewhat different approach to the traditional RTS power fantasy. Expansion and military strength still matter, but keeping the people under your protection alive is just as important.
Food is particularly significant. Instead of functioning as just another resource to stockpile, food directly affects population growth, military forces, and the overall ability of a settlement to survive and expand.
A Story-Driven RTS Campaign
One of the biggest additions compared with the original The Fertile Crescent is a substantially expanded narrative component.
The Early Access version launches with 10 narrative-driven campaign missions, comprising Acts 1 and 2 of the planned story. Players follow Mutti as he attempts to protect his family and friends while the world around them descends into chaos.
That focus gives the campaign more personal stakes than the usual march toward territorial domination.
Wield Interactive plans to add Acts 3 and 4 during Early Access, eventually completing the game’s full campaign.
Four Civilizations Ready for Battle
Players aren’t restricted to the campaign.
The Early Access release includes skirmish and multiplayer modes alongside the story campaign, with four playable factions representing major powers of the ancient world:
- Assyrians
- Egyptians
- Babylonians
- Hittites
Each civilization brings historically inspired units and different strategic possibilities to the battlefield.
At launch, skirmish and multiplayer support up to four players, with dedicated multiplayer servers and support for computer-controlled opponents. Wield Interactive intends to expand multiplayer and skirmish matches to six players during Early Access.
More Than Just Campaign Missions
The launch build also includes full save-and-load support for single-player modes and Tactical Pause, allowing players to stop the action while assessing the battlefield and issuing commands.
Wield Interactive says it has also made numerous improvements based on its experience developing the original game, including updates to pathfinding, AI, performance, user interface design, environments, fog of war, and other quality-of-life features.
Despite the Early Access label, the developer says its goal was to make the initial build feel closer to a finished release than a rough work-in-progress.
What’s Coming During Early Access?
Wield Interactive currently expects The Fertile Crescent 2 to remain in Early Access for approximately three months, although development plans can always change.
During that period, the studio plans to introduce Acts 3 and 4 of the campaign, expand multiplayer and skirmish support to six players, add a map editor, and continue making gameplay improvements based on community feedback.
Community feedback played an important role in the development of the original The Fertile Crescent, and Wield Interactive is taking a similar approach with the sequel.
The planned map editor could prove especially interesting for the game’s long-term future, giving the community tools to create its own battlefields and scenarios after launch.
The Fertile Crescent Returns on a Much Larger Scale
The original The Fertile Crescent offered a retro-inspired take on classic real-time strategy. Its sequel appears determined to take that foundation considerably further.
Adding a narrative campaign, four civilizations, dedicated multiplayer, survival mechanics, expanded environments, and eventually a map editor gives Collapse of the Bronze Age a much broader scope.
More importantly, its historical setting provides an interesting backdrop for an RTS. Instead of beginning with a small settlement and inevitably building an unstoppable empire, players enter a world where established empires are already failing.
Sometimes winning isn’t about conquering the world.
It’s about surviving long enough to see what remains of it.
TFC2: The Fertile Crescent 2 – Collapse of the Bronze Age is available now in Steam Early Access for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The game is developed by Wield Interactive and published by MicroProse Software.
