Disney’s Live-Action Gargoyles Reboot Is Officially Dead

After years of speculation and development, Disney’s planned live-action revival of Gargoyles has apparently turned to stone for good.

The long-awaited Gargoyles live-action reboot is no longer moving forward at Disney+, bringing an end to one of the more intriguing attempts to resurrect a cult-favorite Disney property for a new generation.

The project had been in development at Disney+ since 2023 and involved some significant horror talent behind the scenes, including Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster. Despite the pedigree and decades of fan interest in seeing Gargoyles return, the live-action series ultimately failed to make it out of development.

Gargoyles Was Supposed to Get the Live-Action Treatment

Originally airing from 1994 to 1997, Gargoyles stood apart from much of Disney’s television animation of the era.

The series followed a clan of ancient Scottish gargoyles who were cursed to remain frozen in stone for centuries. After their castle was transported to modern-day Manhattan, the creatures awakened at night and became reluctant protectors of New York City.

Led by Goliath, the Manhattan Clan quickly became involved in stories involving mythology, science fiction, corporate conspiracies and Shakespearean influences.

That unusually mature storytelling helped Gargoyles develop a dedicated following that has endured for decades.

A live-action adaptation therefore seemed like an obvious candidate as Disney continued digging through its enormous catalog for properties capable of being reinvented.

In October 2023, reports emerged that Disney+ was developing a live-action Gargoyles television series with Gary Dauberman attached as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

James Wan’s Atomic Monster was also involved with the production.

Considering Wan and Dauberman’s backgrounds with projects such as The Conjuring universe, Annabelle and It, their involvement suggested Disney might embrace some of the darker gothic atmosphere that made Gargoyles distinctive in the first place.

Unfortunately, that version will never make it to screens.

Greg Weisman Confirms the Bad News

Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman has now addressed the status of the proposed revival, confirming that the project is no longer happening.

That confirmation effectively closes the book on this particular attempt to bring the Manhattan Clan into live action.

It’s especially disappointing considering how much renewed attention Gargoyles has received in recent years.

The original animated series has remained accessible to modern audiences through Disney+, while Dynamite Entertainment has continued expanding the Gargoyles universe through comics written by Weisman.

Those projects demonstrated that there was still an audience interested in Goliath, Demona, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway and the rest of the characters.

For longtime fans, however, a major television revival remained the big prize.

Could Gargoyles Still Return Someday?

The death of this particular Gargoyles live-action reboot doesn’t necessarily mean Disney is finished with the franchise forever.

Hollywood development is notoriously unpredictable. Projects can spend years in development, disappear completely and then reemerge under entirely different creative teams.

Gargoyles also has something working in its favor: nostalgia.

The generation that watched the original Disney Afternoon series during the 1990s is now precisely the demographic entertainment companies frequently target with legacy sequels, remakes and revivals.

There are also plenty of directions Disney could eventually take.

A continuation of the animated series could potentially appeal directly to longtime viewers without requiring the enormous visual-effects budget necessary to convincingly create a live-action Manhattan Clan.

Disney could also revisit the live-action concept years from now with a different producer, writer or creative direction.

For the moment, though, none of those possibilities amount to an announced replacement for the canceled project.

Maybe Animation Was Always the Better Answer

There will inevitably be Gargoyles fans who aren’t particularly upset about losing the live-action adaptation.

The original series’ combination of gothic architecture, enormous winged creatures, medieval flashbacks and nighttime battles would have required extensive visual effects. Translating those elements into live action while preserving the personality of the animated characters would have been an enormous creative challenge.

We’ve also reached an era where audiences increasingly question whether beloved animated properties actually need live-action remakes.

For Gargoyles, a high-quality animated continuation could arguably provide more creative freedom while maintaining the visual identity that helped make the original show memorable.

Whether Disney ever chooses that route remains to be seen.

The Manhattan Clan Sleeps Again

For now, the planned Gargoyles live-action reboot joins the long list of ambitious Hollywood projects that never escaped development.

It’s a frustrating outcome for fans who have spent years waiting for Disney to seriously revisit one of its most distinctive animated properties.

Gargoyles has survived for more than three decades because its audience never completely disappeared. Comics, streaming and continued fan enthusiasm have kept Goliath and the Manhattan Clan alive long after the original television series ended.

The live-action reboot may be dead.

The franchise probably isn’t.

And considering how often Hollywood resurrects beloved properties, it would be foolish to assume we’ve seen the last of Gargoyles.
