Hogwarts Legacy 2 Officially Confirmed by Warner Bros.
The wait is finally over for Wizarding World fans. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that a second installment of Hogwarts Legacy is in its upcoming video game pipeline following the enormous success of the original game.
After years of speculation, hints and executive comments, a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is officially moving forward.
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the project as part of its latest update to shareholders, identifying a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” among the games expected to help drive the company’s future gaming business.
While fans will undoubtedly refer to the project as Hogwarts Legacy 2, Warner Bros. has not yet announced an official title for the sequel.
The company also hasn’t revealed a release date, platforms, gameplay details or story information, meaning there’s still plenty we don’t know about the next trip to the Wizarding World.
What we do know is that Warner Bros. sees Hogwarts Legacy as an important part of its future.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Is Finally Official
The confirmation comes as Warner Bros. Discovery continues restructuring its video game strategy around a smaller number of major franchises.
In its shareholder update, the company described games as an important opportunity for long-term growth and said its strategy is focused around four franchises valued at more than $1 billion.
Among its future pipeline, Warner Bros. specifically identified the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.
That’s an important distinction.
Warner Bros. executives have discussed the possibility of another Hogwarts Legacy for years, but the new statement moves the sequel beyond simply being a priority or something the company would like to make. Warner Bros. Discovery is now including it directly in its upcoming games pipeline.
For fans of the original, that’s about as definitive as it gets without a full reveal trailer.
Hogwarts Legacy Has Sold More Than 40 Million Copies
It’s not difficult to understand why Warner Bros. wants another game.
The original Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, making it one of the company’s most successful video game releases.
Originally released in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy was developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label.
The open-world action RPG transported players to the Wizarding World during the 1800s, long before the events of the Harry Potter books and films.
Players created their own Hogwarts student, selected a house, attended classes, learned spells and explored an expansive world that included Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the surrounding Scottish Highlands.
The game initially launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC before arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. An enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 version followed in 2025.
With more than 40 million copies sold, a sequel was increasingly a question of when, rather than if.
Now we have the answer.
What Will Hogwarts Legacy 2 Be About?
That’s currently the biggest mystery.
Warner Bros. has not revealed whether the sequel will continue the story of the original game’s protagonist or introduce players to an entirely new student and time period.
The first game takes place during the late 1800s and follows a fifth-year student who possesses an unusual ability to perceive and manipulate Ancient Magic.
That setting gave Avalanche considerable freedom to tell an original story without directly adapting the adventures of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
A sequel could continue down that path.
Warner Bros. could bring players back to Hogwarts several years after the original, allowing familiar students, professors and locations to return while expanding the surrounding Wizarding World.
Alternatively, the developers could use the Hogwarts Legacy name as the foundation for an anthology-style series, moving into another period of Wizarding World history with a new protagonist.
Until Warner Bros. reveals more, both possibilities remain speculation.
Could Hogwarts Legacy 2 Connect to HBO’s Harry Potter Series?
One particularly interesting element surrounding the sequel is Warner Bros. Discovery’s larger strategy for the Harry Potter franchise.
Warner Bros. executives previously revealed that the games team had been coordinating some of the broader storytelling elements of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television series.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the game will suddenly take place during Harry Potter’s years at Hogwarts.
In fact, the original game’s 1800s setting gives the developers considerable separation from the events of the books.
Instead, the coordination could involve locations, visual design, Wizarding World lore and other elements that Warner Bros. wants to keep consistent across its growing Harry Potter projects.
Exactly how extensive that connection will be remains unknown.
Will Avalanche Software Develop Hogwarts Legacy 2?
Another surprisingly unanswered question is who is actually developing the sequel.
Avalanche Software developed the original Hogwarts Legacy, making the studio the obvious candidate to return.
However, Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest confirmation does not identify the developer responsible for the second installment.
Until the company formally announces Avalanche Software’s involvement, its return shouldn’t be treated as confirmed.
Given the first game’s extraordinary commercial performance and Avalanche’s experience building its version of Hogwarts and the surrounding open world, however, the studio would certainly be the most logical choice.
What Hogwarts Legacy 2 Needs to Improve
The original Hogwarts Legacy delivered something fans had wanted for years: the ability to freely explore Hogwarts as their own witch or wizard.
But there’s still plenty of room for a sequel to expand on that foundation.
One of the most obvious opportunities is making Hogwarts itself feel more like an actual school.
More meaningful classes, deeper relationships with professors and students, additional house-specific content and consequences for player decisions could make the role-playing side of the experience significantly stronger.
A sequel could also expand the companion system.
Characters such as Sebastian Sallow, Ominis Gaunt, Natsai Onai and Poppy Sweeting became important parts of the original adventure, but deeper friendship systems and more consequential choices could give players greater control over their personal Hogwarts story.
Then there’s the feature many players wanted from the beginning:
Quidditch.
The famous Wizarding World sport was noticeably absent from Hogwarts Legacy, despite the game featuring broom flight and a fully constructed Quidditch pitch.
Whether Quidditch finally becomes playable in the sequel remains unknown, but it would undoubtedly be one of the most requested additions.
A Deeper Morality System Could Make Choices Matter
Another area ripe for improvement is morality.
Hogwarts Legacy allowed players to make certain narrative choices and even learn the three Unforgivable Curses — Avada Kedavra, Crucio and Imperio — without implementing a traditional morality system.
The game’s official FAQ specifically stated that Hogwarts Legacy did not have one.
That leaves considerable room for the sequel.
Imagine a system where repeatedly using Dark Arts changes how professors, classmates and other witches and wizards react to your character.
Choosing to embrace darker magic could potentially open unique quests while closing others. Conversely, refusing to use forbidden spells could create different relationships and opportunities.
A stronger consequences system could dramatically increase replayability while making the player’s witch or wizard feel genuinely unique.
The Wizarding World Could Get Much Bigger
Hogwarts Castle remains the obvious centerpiece, but the sequel also gives Warner Bros. an opportunity to expand the playable Wizarding World.
The first game already allowed players to explore Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and a substantial portion of the countryside surrounding Hogwarts.
A sequel could push farther outward.
Locations such as Diagon Alley would immediately stand out as potential additions, while entirely new regions could allow the developers to introduce environments that weren’t possible within the original game’s map.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the sequel needs a dramatically larger open world.
A denser world filled with more interactive locations, meaningful NPCs, secrets and dynamic activities could ultimately be more valuable than simply increasing the size of the map.
When Will Hogwarts Legacy 2 Release?
For now, there is no official release date.
Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t provided a release window or indicated how far along development currently is.
Previous comments from Warner Bros. executives have made it clear that the sequel is a major priority, but until the company provides an official window, any specific release date should be treated as speculation.
The same applies to platforms.
No PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or PC versions have officially been announced yet.
Given the size of the franchise, however, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is likely to become one of Warner Bros. Games’ biggest releases whenever it eventually arrives.
Hogwarts Legacy Is Becoming a Major Gaming Franchise
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the announcement isn’t simply that another Hogwarts Legacy is coming.
It’s that Warner Bros. clearly sees the franchise as a major pillar of its video game business.
The original proved that players were interested in experiencing the Wizarding World through stories that didn’t simply retell Harry Potter’s adventures.
More than 40 million sales later, Warner Bros. now has the opportunity to turn Hogwarts Legacy into an ongoing gaming franchise.
The foundation is already there.
Hogwarts Castle remains one of the most impressive locations created for a Wizarding World game, the spell-based combat system has plenty of room to evolve, and the setting provides decades — potentially centuries — of unexplored history.
Now the challenge is making the sequel feel like more than another trip through the same castle.
Deeper role-playing mechanics, more consequential decisions, expanded relationships, improved school life and a more interactive Wizarding World could transform an already successful formula into something considerably more ambitious.
For now, we’ll have to wait for Warner Bros. to reveal exactly what its second Hogwarts Legacy adventure will look like.
But after years of speculation, at least one thing is finally certain:
We’re going back to Hogwarts.
