Stars Reach Launches into Early Access on Steam
A new sandbox MMORPG from one of the genre’s most experienced designers has officially opened its doors.
Stars Reach, the science-fantasy MMORPG from Playable Worlds and veteran game designer Raph Koster, launched into Steam Early Access today, August 18, 2026. Koster previously served as lead designer on Ultima Online and creative director on Star Wars Galaxies, two games that helped establish many of the ideas associated with player-driven online worlds.
With Stars Reach, Koster and the team at Playable Worlds are returning to those sandbox roots while attempting something considerably more ambitious: creating a persistent galaxy where players don’t simply explore the environment — they can fundamentally change it.
A Galaxy Designed to React to Players
At the center of Stars Reach is its environmental simulation.
Instead of planets functioning primarily as static backdrops for quests and combat, the game’s environments are designed to respond dynamically to both natural processes and player activity.
Water can flow and flood. Forests can burn. Temperatures and seasons can affect environments, while players can manipulate terrain and resources as they explore and settle planets.
That simulation feeds directly into the larger sandbox experience.
Players can gather resources, craft items, trade with others, construct homes and settlements, fight hostile creatures and participate in player-created governments. The Early Access version currently includes systems for combat, building, government, crafting and trade.
Rather than placing players into completely separate copies of the universe, Stars Reach is also designed around a shared online galaxy.
The result is an MMO where the actions of players could potentially become just as important as content created by the developers.
Building More Than a Character
Character progression is only one part of the experience.
Players can establish homesteads, build communities and participate in a broader player-driven economy. Settlements can eventually become organized communities with governments, while trade and resource availability can connect different regions of the galaxy.
Exploration extends beyond individual planets as well.
Players can travel between worlds using portals and wormholes and eventually venture into space, where Playable Worlds says many of the interconnected systems found on planetary surfaces continue to operate.
That emphasis on player agency should sound familiar to longtime MMO fans.
Koster’s previous work on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies helped popularize virtual worlds where crafting, social interaction and player-created stories could be as important as traditional combat.
Stars Reach appears to be an attempt to take that philosophy and build it around modern technology and a much deeper simulation.
Early Access Is Still Early
Players interested in jumping into Stars Reach should keep the Early Access label in mind.
Playable Worlds says the current version establishes the foundation of the game, but development is far from finished. Players should expect bugs, balance adjustments, evolving systems and other changes as development continues.
The studio currently expects Stars Reach to remain in Early Access for at least six months, although community feedback will help determine the eventual path toward version 1.0.
Playable Worlds plans to expand the galaxy during that period with additional worlds, creatures, professions and opportunities for players while continuing to improve performance, stability, accessibility and the underlying simulation.
There is also an important warning for players concerned about progression.
The developer currently expects at least one progression wipe before the game leaves Early Access. Purchased and granted account entitlements, including eligible Founders Pack and Kickstarter rewards, are expected to remain tied to player accounts through the wipe.
How Much Does Stars Reach Cost?
Stars Reach launches as a paid Early Access game, with the standard version currently priced at $29.99 on Steam.
Additional Founders editions are available, including the Voyager Founders Edition for $49.99, with higher-tier options offering additional rewards and cosmetics.
That payment model isn’t expected to remain forever.
Playable Worlds says it plans to retire the Founders Packs and transition Stars Reach to a free-to-play model when the game reaches version 1.0.
Can Stars Reach Bring Back the Sandbox MMO?
That may ultimately be the biggest question surrounding the game.
Modern MMORPGs frequently revolve around developer-created quests, raids, seasonal content and carefully structured progression. Stars Reach is betting heavily on another philosophy: give players interconnected systems and enough freedom to create their own stories.
It’s an approach that recalls an earlier era of MMORPG design, but the environmental simulation could allow Stars Reach to push that concept significantly further.
A forest fire isn’t necessarily just a visual effect. Mining isn’t simply clicking on a resource node. Changing terrain, gathering resources and establishing settlements can potentially have consequences for the people sharing that world.
If Playable Worlds can successfully connect those systems at MMO scale, Stars Reach could offer something increasingly uncommon in the genre.
For now, Early Access represents the beginning of that experiment rather than its conclusion.
After years of development and closed testing, players finally have the opportunity to enter the galaxy themselves — and potentially help determine what it becomes.
Stars Reach is available now in Early Access on PC through Steam.
