The Witcher 3 Remastered Announced, Launches September 29

Geralt of Rivia is heading back onto the Path sooner than expected.

CD PROJEKT RED officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, revealing that the upgraded version of its acclaimed open-world RPG will launch on September 29, 2026.

Even better for longtime players, The Witcher 3 Remastered will be offered as a free upgrade to existing owners of the base game on supported platforms.

The announcement wasn’t the only surprise for Witcher fans. CD PROJEKT RED also provided a new look at Songs of the Past, the upcoming third expansion for The Witcher 3 that will send Geralt into an entirely new region when it arrives in 2027.

The Witcher 3 Remastered Goes Beyond Better Graphics

The Witcher 3 already received a substantial current-generation upgrade in 2022, but CD PROJEKT RED is going considerably further with Remastered.

The new version is designed to modernize both the presentation and gameplay of Geralt’s adventure.

Visually, players can expect improved environmental, NPC and monster textures alongside reworked lighting and additional ray-tracing improvements. The changes are intended to make locations such as Velen and Novigrad look more natural and detailed while improving lighting and shadows throughout the world.

Gameplay is receiving attention as well.

Combat animations have been revamped to make Geralt’s movements more fluid, while a new adaptive camera dynamically changes its position depending on the combat situation.

CD PROJEKT RED is also making changes to traversal, general movement, character progression and the game’s skill trees.

That makes The Witcher 3 Remastered much more than a simple resolution and texture upgrade.

Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine Are Included

There’s another major bonus for players who never purchased The Witcher 3’s original expansions.

Remastered includes both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

Existing owners of the base game who don’t already have the expansions will receive them as part of the upgrade. The two expansions substantially extend Geralt’s story and have long been considered some of the strongest additional content released for the game.

The Witcher 3 Remastered will be a free upgrade for existing owners on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the game also making its debut on Nintendo Switch 2.

Geralt Isn’t Finished Yet

Perhaps the bigger long-term surprise is that CD PROJEKT RED isn’t simply polishing Geralt’s existing adventures.

He’s getting another one.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past is a completely new expansion being co-developed by CD PROJEKT RED and Fool’s Theory, the studio also working on the remake of the original Witcher.

Songs of the Past takes Geralt to Letten, a previously unexplored region that also happens to be Dandelion’s homeland.

Geralt travels there alongside his longtime friend to help with a personal matter. Although Letten initially appears peaceful and prosperous, something considerably darker is hiding beneath the surface.

And that means there’s work for a witcher.

New Monsters and a Familiar Weapon

Songs of the Past will introduce new monsters, new mutagens and additional combat options.

One of the most interesting additions is the chain weapon.

Longtime Witcher fans may recognize the weapon from the opening cinematic of the original Witcher game. This time, however, Geralt will actually be able to wield it during gameplay.

The chain is designed in part for crowd control, giving players another way to deal with groups of enemies.

It’s a fascinating connection between the franchise’s past and its future — particularly with Fool’s Theory simultaneously developing the remake of the first game.

The Witcher 3 Continues More Than a Decade Later

The original Witcher 3 launched in 2015 and became one of the most successful RPGs ever released.

CD PROJEKT RED says the game has now sold more than 65 million copies worldwide and received more than 250 Game of the Year awards.

More than 11 years later, the studio clearly isn’t finished with it.

The arrival of The Witcher 3 Remastered on September 29 provides players with another reason to revisit the Continent before Songs of the Past arrives in 2027.

Meanwhile, CD PROJEKT RED continues development on the next mainline entry in the franchise, The Witcher 4, which begins a new saga centered around Ciri.

For Witcher fans, the next few years are shaping up to be unusually busy.
